Design (MFA)

1. Program Overview & Features

The Master of Design (MFA) at Zhaoqing University is a key training base for design talents in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Supported by Guangdong’s key development disciplines and provincial first-class undergraduate programs (Visual Communication Design), it focuses on three directions: Craft Design, Product Design, and Visual Art Design, featuring “intangible cultural heritage (ICH) revitalization, modern design innovation, and industrial empowerment for the Greater Bay Area”. Located in Zhaoqing—the “Capital of Duan Inkstones” and a core city in the Greater Bay Area—the program benefits from unique local advantages in inkstone carving, jade carving, lacquer art, and ICH innovation, surrounded by the natural and cultural heritage of Xinghu Scenic Area. Adhering to the philosophy of industry-university-research integration, global vision, and local engagement, the program maintains close cooperation with local cultural and creative, intelligent manufacturing, and digital media enterprises. It provides international-standard facilities including a Design Innovation Center, ICH Workshop, and Digital Interaction Lab, as well as joint workshops, exchange programs, and dual-degree pathways with overseas art schools. Welcoming applicants worldwide with design-related backgrounds, the program offers an inclusive, multicultural environment where students explore Eastern design wisdom while engaging with global cutting-edge practices.

2.Program Objectives

The program aims to cultivate high-level applied design professionals with global vision, cross-cultural communication competence, and innovative design thinking, serving the cultural and creative and digital economy development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Students are expected to uphold moral integrity, with strong humanistic literacy, professional ethics, and global responsibility; systematically master core design theories, cutting-edge methodologies, and professional skills to independently conduct design research, creative planning, project implementation, and cultural communication; proficiently use bilingualism for cross-cultural design collaboration, understand traditional Chinese craft culture and contemporary design contexts, and develop creative capabilities integrating Eastern aesthetics with global trends. For international students, the program emphasizes three modules: Chinese cultural understanding, traditional craft experience, and cross-cultural design management, enhancing competitiveness in Chinese and global design careers. Students are encouraged to participate in international exhibitions, joint design projects, and academic conferences, forming a “theory–practice–international exchange” integrated training pathway. Graduates can work as design directors, chief designers, project managers, or independent designers in multinational design firms, cultural and creative enterprises, digital media, ICH preservation, and educational institutions, becoming interdisciplinary professionals bridging Eastern and Western design cultures.

3. Core Courses

The curriculum adopts a modular, international, cross-cultural structure, divided into four modules: general foundation, professional core, specialization electives, and practical projects. Courses are taught in English or bilingual to meet international students’ needs. The general foundation module includes Chinese Culture & Design, Cross-Cultural Design Communication, Design Research Methods, Academic Writing & Ethics, helping international students adapt to the academic environment and master research tools. The professional core module covers Frontier Design Theories, Contemporary Design Trends, Digital Design Technologies, Design Strategy & Innovation, ICH Preservation & Design Transformation, building a systematic design knowledge framework. Specialization electives offer three tracks: Craft Design (Inkstone Carving Art, Lacquer Art Creation, Traditional Materials & Crafts, ICH Innovation Design); Product Design (Smart Product Design, Sustainable Design, Ergonomics, Product System Innovation); Visual Art Design (Brand Visual Design, Digital Media Design, Interaction Design, Motion Graphics & Video Creation). The practical project module includes International Joint Design Workshops, Industry Live Projects, ICH Field Research, and Graduation Design (Thesis), emphasizing learning by doing, cross-cultural collaboration, and local innovation. Taught jointly by Chinese and international faculty, the curriculum integrates Eastern and Western design education strengths, nurturing students’ international design competence with both theoretical depth and practical skills.

4.Career Prospects

International graduates of the program enjoy diverse career pathways across the global design industry and cultural and creative ecosystem, with broad prospects, high international mobility, and strong growth potential. Main career directions include: Multinational Design Firms (international brand agencies, consulting firms, digital design studios), working as visual designers, product designers, interaction designers, or design strategists on global projects; Cultural & Creative Industries (ICH institutions, museum cultural creativity, art organizations, exhibition curation), engaging in traditional craft innovation, cultural and creative product development, cultural IP design, and international communication; Digital Economy (internet giants, tech companies, new media platforms, gaming & film), responsible for UI/UX design, brand visual identity, motion graphics, digital interaction, and user experience innovation; Sustainable & Social Design (green design, social impact design, community building, rural revitalization), participating in international sustainability projects to drive design empowerment for social development; Education & Academia (Chinese and international art universities, design research institutes, cultural exchange organizations), working in design teaching, research, curation, and international cultural exchange; Entrepreneurship (independent design studios, cross-border cultural brands, ICH innovation workshops), leveraging traditional Chinese craft resources and global markets to build international design brands with Eastern aesthetics. The Greater Bay Area’s strategic location and global alumni network provide international students with extensive career platforms and access to global resources.

5. Faculty

The Master of Design program boasts an international, high-level, industry-academia integrated faculty, comprising senior Chinese and international professors, renowned industry designers, ICH masters, and visiting professors from overseas, with broad academic vision, rich practical experience, and strong international engagement. The Chinese core faculty consists of PhD holders and senior title teachers, many with doctoral/postdoctoral experience at top overseas universities (Europe, America, Japan, Korea) and professional design experience internationally.
